Pathogenesis of Candida Albicans Infection following Antibiotic Therapy

چکیده

One of the complications which may be encountered during the course of therapy with antibiotics is the development of secondary infections superimposed upon the condition being treated. These superimposed infections are caused by microorganisms resistant to the original treatment and, when a fungus is responsible for the new infection, the problem becomes particularly distressing because of the general lack of satisfactory therapeutic measures for management of mycotic disease. It is obvious that an understanding of the biologic phenomena responsible for the development of these superinfections would lead toward a more rational approach to antibiotic therapy. One of the theories offered in explanation of this problem states that the antibiotics directly stimulate the fungus. Since candidiasis is one of the more frequent mycotic complications encountered, much of the reported work in this area of interest is concerned with the effect of the antibiotics on Candida albicans, and here the evidence is conflicting. The studies of some investigators would indicate that at least one of the more common antibiotics does stimulate the growth and virulence of C. albicans, while others have been unable to demonstrate this effect (Foley and Winter, 1949; Hazen et al., 1953; Kligman, 1952; Lipnik et al., 1952; Moore, 1951; Pappenfort and Schnall, 1951; Seligmann, 1952, 1953; Woods et al., 1951). In an attempt to resolve these differences, Huppert et al.

Pathogenesis of Candida albicans infection following antibiotic therapy. II. Further studies of the effect of antibiotics on the in vitro growth of Candida albicans.

Since the beginning of antibiotic therapy on a large scale, it has become apparent that quite frequently the initial infection for which the therapy was instituted has been replaced with an invasion by microorganisms which are resistant to the particular antibiotic being used (McCoy, 1954). This new process may vary from a relatively mild infestation (Sharp, 1954) to an extremely severe and pos...

Cerebral candidiasis: case report of brain abscess secondary to Candida albicans, and review of literature.

A patient with a brain abscess due to Candida albicans is reported. This patient had three episodes of systemic candidiasis in spite of the fact that she had no underlying debilitating disease and had never received prior antibiotic or adrenocortical steroid therapy. A review of the literature reveals 42 cases of central nervous system Candida albicans infection. The salient features of these c...

The Serodiagnosis of Moniliasis

Soon after broad spectrum antibiotic drugs became available for therapy, reports appeared in the literature describing moniial infections of the anogenital area and oral mucosa. Cannon (1) reported on the considerable amount of attention being centered upon the problem of the rising frequency of monilial infections in relation to antibiotic therapy. Loh and Baker (2) studied the fecal flora of ...

Polymicrobial Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia: Fighting In Vitro Candida albicans-Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilms with Antifungal-Antibacterial Combination Therapy

The polymicrobial nature of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is now evident, with mixed bacterial-fungal biofilms colonizing the VAP endotracheal tube (ETT) surface. The microbial interplay within this infection may contribute for enhanced pathogenesis and exert impact towards antimicrobial therapy. Consequently, the high mortality/morbidity rates associated to VAP and the worldwide increa...

Speciation of fecal Candida isolates in antibiotic-associated diarrhea in non-HIV patients.

Candida is the most frequently encountered fungal infection of the gastrointestinal tract after antibiotic exposure. The pathogenesis of Candida probably varies with each species. The speciation of fecal Candida after antibiotic use is not well investigated. One hundred and eleven fecal samples negative for Clostridium difficile toxin and for other enteric pathogens formed the basis of our inve...
